MY STORY
When my son was diagnosed with autism at age 3, I wasn’t sure what that meant for him or our family. I had very limited knowledge autism. Mostly I was in denial about his diagnosis and I was scared.
I heard about the limited possibilities for autistic children; that most are never able to live independently and, “No one can break up a family like a child with autism.” Pretty grim prognosis. I just tried to keep my head afloat (just keep swimming, just keep swimming.) I was navigating my son’s intense tantrums and rigidity which made it very difficult to leave the house or have a full night’s sleep.
It was during this very difficult period of isolation and survival that I realized I had to take action. I read books, searched online for info, attended trainings, met with consultants -- anything that would help me better understand my son and how to connect with him.
And guess what? It worked. Slowly but surely my whole philosophy changed. I learned that building a relationship of trust and acceptance was paramount. We bonded in the most extraordinary way. And that is how I dug myself out of the dark hole that was my world.
My son has grown so much since he was first diagnosed at age 3. I am happy to say we have a wonderful relationship and he seems to be a much happier kid. I know I am a much happier mom.
If you are struggling, burnt out, or feeling isolated, please know that you are not alone. You are part of a very special village and we welcome you.
